It takes more than 10 years to bring new medicines onto the market. Drug creation R&D requires enormous time and upfront investment.
Daiichi Sankyo has achieved absolute results in the three diseases of "hypertension", "bacterial infections" and "hyperlipidemia" and we continuously put our efforts into them as Lifecycle Management Area.
Meanwhile, in the Late-stage Development, we focus our resources mainly in the development of thrombosis such as Prasugrel's ACS-MM (Acute Coronary syndrome Medical Management) and Edoxaban.

In the First Mid-Term Business Management Plan, we had defined four diseases of "thrombosis", "diabetes", "malignant neoplasm", and "autoimmune diseases / rheumatoid arthritis" as R&D Core Disease Areas.
During this period, we successfully started Global Clinical Study of Edoxaban which is anticipated to become one of the major products.
Even though medical technology has shown remarkable breakthrough, unmet medical needs still remain in the world.
To reinforce the competitiveness of research in the disease areas which have high unmet medical needs in 2015 as a Global Pharma Innovator, we focus our resources on Oncology and cardiovascular-Metabolics as the priority areas in our solid foundation that has been built up over the years.
We also have just established a "Novel Category", which we are challenging through the new mid- and long term approach in preparing for 2015 and beyond. In the novel category, we do not always follow the existing framework of the disease category, but focus discovery research based on the frontier knowledge of pathological mechanism, and aspire to create first-in-class medicines in the remaining unmet medical needs.
