Diseases that used to be regarded as incurable, such as tuberculosis, as well as those which could only be treated through surgery, such as peptic ulcers, have now been overcome with the advance of medical technologies and the advent of new drugs, saving the lives of many patients and dramatically improving quality of life. On the other hand, there are still a number of diseases for which medical care is not satisfactory or for which cures have not been established. Such unsatisfied medical needs are called “unmet medical needs”. The mission of DAIICHI SANKYO lies in the development of innovative pharmaceuticals capable of addressing these unmet medical needs.
In order to fulfill this mission, DAIICHI SANKYO further refines the pharmaceutical technologies that we have built up over the years to create high-quality and innovative drugs, aiming at creating innovative pharmaceuticals that can contribute to patients across the world at the earliest possible time and continuously.

Meanwhile, such studies require an enormous amount of investment and the critical mass (minimum amount of resources required to achieve the results) for research and development tends to increase.
Aiming to for the realization of the Global Pharma Innovator in 2015 , DAIICHI SANKYO will focus our research and development resources on these areas on a priority basis, as well as making decisions from diversified viewpoints based on science and business perspectives at the GEMRAD (Global Executive Meeting of Research And Development), our supreme body for decision making in terms of global research and development, in order to maximize outcomes.
