Winners of 10th Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research and 11th Manpei Suzuki Prize for Diabetes Care and Education Announced
Tokyo, Japan (December 14, 2017) - The Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation* (Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President, Takashi Shoda; hereafter, the Foundation), a related public interest incorporated foundation of Daiichi Sankyo Company Limited (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), today announced that it had decided on the winners of its 10th Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research and its 11th Manpei Suzuki Prize for Diabetes Care and Education according to the details in the “Summary of Recipients” below.
The Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research (international prize) and Manpei Suzuki Prize for Diabetes Care and Education (Japan prize) are awards inaugurated in November, 2007 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Foundation. The international prize is awarded to one researcher from anywhere in the world every year for original, excellent research achievements. The Japan prize is given every year for the achievements of an individual, facility, body, team or group over an extended period in efforts in diabetes care and education in a particular region, or that cover several regions, that contribute to treatment and prevention, with the purpose of improving medical care and welfare for diabetic patients.
The Foundation hopes that the award of the international prize will be an incentive for researchers from all over the world working in diabetology research and lead to further advances in diabetology, futhermore; that the award of the Japan prize will be an incentive for people making efforts in diabetes care and education, and contribute to the treatment and prevention of diabetes.
*Since its establishment in December 1993, the mission of the Foundation has been “encourage young researchers through the promotion of exchanges among those working in the field of diabetes worldwide, in order to contribute to the advancement of diabetes research”, and has been carrying out various financial assistance programs for this purpose.

Reasons for Selection:
Satako Doguchi
Satako Doguchi is considered eligible to receive the award based on the following achievements. Making use of her experience as one of the staff inaugurating the inpatient education system when the hospital’s diabetes center was established, as well as her experience in expanding patient education and in the creation and operation of the inpatient education system. Seeing the need to improve communication among Naka Kinen Clinic departments, she carried out the unified management of nurses, registered dieticians, pharmacists and clinical laboratory, technologists as a diabetes care and education team. Ms. Doguchi was also responsible for the introduction of a setup using passes into the outpatient education system. The pass is in the form of a card and the system using it was adopted by the Japan Association for Diabetes Education and Care in 2016 as a standard education system, and its use has expanded since then. Using her experience in instructor workshops conducted by the Ibaraki Prefectural Diabetes Association, she played a key role in organizing workshops for paramedics and was then appointed as the first chairperson of the Ibaraki Diabetes Care and Education Instructors Association. There has been great enthusiasm in the workshops and they have contributed to raising the standard of local instructors as well as to the renewal of their certifications. In the role of Director of the Ibaraki Diabetes Association and as a member of the Ibaraki Prefecture CDE-L Certification Committee, she has been steadily contributing to diabetes care and education in the region.
Kenji Shima
Kenji Shima is considered eligible to receive the award based on the following achievements. He took the initiative in diabetes care and education by forming the Tokushima Prefecture Medical Association Diabetes Measures Group. He was a forerunner in conducting activities targeted by the Japan Council for Promotion of Countermeasures against Diabetes nationwide and in creating an organization for them. Dr. Shima has made efforts to publicize diabetes and diabetes care education in cooperation with local governments and in order to strengthen medical coordination, and he created a pass system that enabled the participation of public health nurses. Focusing on the importance of exercise therapy as a marathon runner himself, Dr. Shima was involved in the creation of “Awaodori Exercise”, “Plus 1000 Steps – Association to Promote Exercise by Prefecture Residents,” and “Step Count Diary”, which are widely known and used by prefecture residents. He has promoted diabetes care and education by drawing up Manual for Early Interventions in Diabetes Care, organizing lecture meetings, setting up the Tokushima Prefecture Medical Association Diabetologist Certification System, and launching the Regional Diabetes Care and Education Instructor Certification Project. For several years, Dr. Shima has been actively involved in the expansion of diabetes care and education, as well as in diabetes countermeasures, even in remote areas of Tokushima Prefecture, and created a solid base for the continuation and further development of such activities.
