Seventh Takamine Memorial Sankyo Prize Announced
Tokyo, Japan(December 7, 2009) - The Sankyo Foundation of Life Science Chairman Yasuhiro Ikegami announced today that the Seventh Takamine Memorial Sankyo Prize is to be awarded to Yuichi Sugiyama, Ph.D., Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, The University of Tokyo.
The Takamine Memorial Sankyo Prize was established in November 2003 as part of the Foundation's 20th anniversary and in memory of the research work of Dr. Jokichi Takamine, who was the first president (March 1913-July 1922) of then Sankyo Co., Ltd., now present DAIICHI SANKYO COMPANY, LIMITED.
Since November 1983, the Sankyo Foundation of Life Science has provided support for innovative research in life sciences, including two-year research grants. The foundation also sponsors international symposia and supports exchange programs that see foreign academics visit Japan while Japanese researchers complete short work terms overseas.

After graduating from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of Tokyo in 1971, Dr. Sugiyama worked as a Research Associate at the University before studying abroad at UCLA.
Dr. Sugiyama's research on pharmacokinetics has led to breakthroughs in understanding the role of drug transporters and pharmacodynamics of drugs at the molecular level. Dr. Sugiyama's research achievements have helped facilitate drug development efforts and his techniques have been widely adopted clinically as a method for predicting optimal drug therapies.
