We are living in a singular moment in which the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the world to face unprecedented challenges, and governments, organizations and individuals from various sectors have been brought together to respond to this global crisis. At the same time here in Brazil, we have also seen inspiring examples of solidarity and global support brought about by this shared challenge.

No Time to Waste

According to the NGO Gerando Falcões, the children in 84% of families living in slums, stopped going to school due to the Corona virus, where they in fact had been eating their meals. Thus, family expenses as well as concern about children’s health have been increasing during the pandemic.
Daiichi Sankyo Brasil, which has a fundamental responsibility to contribute to Brazilian society, knew that many families were without food and that the social projects of several institutions and NGOs were being strongly impacted by the pandemic. In September 2020, we decided to create an initiative called “CESTOU” to mobilize our employees to help people in Brazil who had been more adversely affected by the pandemic due to their social vulnerability.

Matching Food Basket Donations

For CESTOU, we selected six institutions that care for socially vulnerable people to which we would donate prepared baskets of food supplies, and we also made it as easy as possible for our employees to participate by directly accessing the “Qualy Cestas” website, which specializes in creating and donating food baskets. Through the site, employees could select and pay for food basket donations from their own pocket. For each food basket donated by our employees, Daiichi Sankyo Brasil pledged to make a matching food basket donation.

During October 2020, we were able to collect 253 baskets donated by our Daiichi Sankyo Brasil employees. Moreover, in addition to doubling that number by matching the number of baskets collected, Daiichi Sankyo Brasil further increased the total number to make a difference in even more families’ lives by donating a total of 230 food baskets to each of the six institutions. Ultimately there were 1,380 food baskets donated by Daiichi Sankyo Brasil and its employees through the #CESTOU project.
